INTRODUCTION TO RHETORIC

ENGL 101

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Rhetoric may be defined as the faculty of observing in any given case the available means of persuasion. This is not a function of any other art.

– Aristotle

Rhetoric is the study and practice of persuasion through both the written and spoken word.  In this course we will cover the history and theory of rhetoric along with the practice.  The student will learn the use of arguments in persuasion.

REQUIRED BOOKS: (available via Scribd.com)

  • The King’s English by H. W. Fowler 
  • On Writing Well
  • Classical Rhetoric and Its Christian and Secular Tradition from Ancient to Modern Times
  • Rhetoric by Aristotle
  • Sacred Rhetoric
  • Other will be linked in the Syllabus below

You will also need a Quizlet account.  They’re free.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Both Fowler’s and Zinsser’s books are to be read before the last three.  These two books will form the foundation of your writing at Miskatonic.  Each week you will be required to outline each piece of reading and write at least 5 pages interacting with what you have read.
